Schlage Deadbolt Installation: The Chicago Owner’s Guide

Most Chicago homeowners discover their Schlage deadbolt is failing when the thumb turn grinds, the key sticks in winter, or the bolt no longer throws fully into the strike. In Lakeview and Bucktown, we regularly see B60-series deadbolts that still function but have developed enough slop in the linkage that the bolt hangs short of the jamb by a quarter inch. That’s a security gap, not a preference.

Which Schlage Models This Applies To

The B-series uses a 1-inch hardened steel bolt and a commercial-grade chassis, which is why we recommend it over the lighter F-series for Chicago front doors exposed to freeze-thaw cycles.

Identification is straightforward: remove the interior thumb turn and look for the Schlage stamp on the chassis, or check the original packaging for the six-digit model number beginning with B60 or B62. Backset measurement matters - Chicago homes built before 1950 often have 2-3/4 inch backsets, while postwar construction is almost always 2-3/8 inch. We carry both on the truck.

Signs Your Schlage Deadbolt Installation Is Failing

• Key rotates but bolt doesn’t throw. The tailpiece connecting the cylinder to the bolt mechanism has sheared or the cam has worn flat. We find this most often in B60Ns installed before 2015, where the zinc alloy tailpiece fatigues after roughly 8-10 years of daily use.
• Thumb turn is stiff or requires two hands. The internal linkage has corroded or the bolt is binding against a misaligned strike plate. Chicago’s road salt tracked into entryways accelerates this - we see it spike every March.
• Bolt extends but doesn’t seat fully in the strike. Either the door has settled on its hinges (common in frame houses in Portage Park and Irving Park) or the strike was never mortised deeply enough. The deadbolt is only secure when the bolt throws its full 1 inch.
• Key works from outside but thumb turn spins freely inside. The interior mounting screws have loosened, allowing the chassis to separate from the trim, or the thumb turn adapter has cracked. Both are quick fixes if caught before the cam drops into the door cavity.
• Visible gap between bolt and strike in the locked position. This is the one that costs people their insurance claim. A bolt that sits 1/4 inch shy of full extension can be pried or shimmed. We document this with a photo and show the customer before touching anything.

The range reflects door thickness (1-3/4 inch standard versus 2-1/4 inch solid wood), whether the existing bore is clean or needs reaming, and whether we need to install a wrap plate to cover old trim scars. DIY or Call Us?

There’s nothing dangerous about a deadbolt replacement, which is why hardware stores sell so many. What they don’t sell is the bore alignment jig, the strike mortising kit, or the patience to discover that your door is actually 1-7/8 inch thick and the included screws bottom out.

What you can safely check: remove the interior thumb turn with a Phillips head and confirm the tailpiece is intact. If it’s sheared, the cylinder side is still live and the key will work - but the bolt won’t move. That’s your sign to call.

Where DIY goes wrong: drilling a new bore without a door jig leaves visible tear-out. Mortising the strike freehand with a chisel almost always creates a gap that lets the bolt rattle. And if you’re replacing a double-cylinder B62N, the interior and exterior cylinders must be timed correctly or the key and thumb turn will fight each other.
