Schlage Lock Rekeying: The Chicago Owner’s Guide

Schlage lock rekeying in Chicago typically runs $29-$49 per cylinder for standard residential deadbolts and knobsets, with most jobs completed same-day. We stock Schlage key-in-knob (KIK) and rim cylinders on every truck, and we quote the full installed price in writing before dispatching a technician. Most homeowners discover they need a rekey after a move, a lost key, or a tenant change - sometimes after trying to rekey themselves and finding the pins won’t seat cleanly in Chicago’s dry winter air.

Which Schlage Models This Applies To

Schlage’s residential line breaks into three series that matter for rekeying: the F-series (entry-grade, most common in homes built 2015-2025), the B-series (commercial-grade deadbolts, heavier brass construction), and the AL-series (light commercial leversets found in Logan Square two-flats and South Loop condo common areas). The F-series uses a standard .115-inch diameter plug with five pins; the B-series deadbolt takes the same keyway but uses a thicker cylinder housing that won’t interchange. We see this mismatch attempted regularly.

To identify your series, check the latch faceplate: F-series stamps “SCHLAGE” in oval script; B-series marks “B60N” or similar on the interior thumbturn escutcheon. The keyway itself - the SC1 for classic brass, the SC4 for Everest - determines which blank we cut. We carry both Schlage OEM cylinders and GMS aftermarket equivalents. The GMS matches spec precisely and costs less; we default to OEM only when the customer specifies or when the existing cylinder is a Primus XP high-security variant, which requires factory-matched sidebars.

One Chicago-specific compatibility note: pre-2010 Schlage deadbolts in Bungalow Belt homes often used the old E-series keyway, which shares the SC1 profile but with deeper root cuts. We stock the pinning kit for these, but most competitors don’t - they’ll sell you a full lock replacement instead.

Signs Your Schlage Lock Rekeying Is Failing

Signs Your Schlage Lock Rekeying Is Failing
  • Key sticks or requires jiggling at specific depths. This usually indicates a driver pin that has worn a flat spot or a spring that has lost tension. In Chicago, we see this accelerate after cold snaps - thermal contraction loosens pin tolerances, then expansion jams the oversize wear pattern.
  • Key turns but the bolt doesn’t retract. The tailpiece connecting cylinder to latch mechanism has sheared or slipped its cotter pin. On Schlage F-series knobs, this is a $12 part, but accessing it requires removing the chassis from the door - easy to strip the mounting screws if you don’t support the backplate.
  • Different keys operate the same lock after a self-rekey attempt. The owner stacked pins in the wrong order or used a .003-inch oversize bottom pin. Schlage’s factory tolerances are tight; a pin 0.001 inch off will create a shear line that accepts multiple key depths.
  • Cylinder rotates loosely in the housing. The cylinder retaining clip (the C-clip on KIK cylinders) has cracked or the cam screw on rim cylinders has backed out. We find this often on front doors facing east - morning sun heats the metal, evening cooling contracts it, and the clip work-hardens over five to seven years.
  • Key won’t insert fully or feels gritty. Debris in the keyway or a mushroomed top pin from bump-key attempts. In Wicker Park and Ukrainian Village rentals, we see this after tenant turnover where the previous occupant tried forced entry methods.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
Standard residential rekey (1-2 cylinders) $29-$49 per cylinder Disassembly, pin replacement, new keys cut, function test
High-security Schlage Primus/Primus XP $89-$149 per cylinder Factory-authorized sidebar pinning, restricted key registration
Cylinder replacement (OEM Schlage) $45-$75 per cylinder New cylinder, keyed to match or new bitting, installation
Aftermarket GMS cylinder $35-$55 per cylinder Equivalent spec, same warranty terms as OEM
Travel/dispatch fee $0 Included in quoted price - no separate call-out charge

The range depends on three factors: cylinder grade (F-series vs. B-series vs. Primus), quantity of cylinders keyed alike, and whether the existing hardware needs repair beyond the cylinder itself. We quote the full price on the phone, and Haven Standard Clause 1 applies: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice. The technician is not permitted to change it. Every rekey includes a 365-Day Done Right Promise - if the key binds, the pin drops, or the cylinder loosens, we return and correct it at no charge.

An owner can safely check two things before calling: confirm the keyway type (SC1, SC4, or Primus - stamped on the key bow) and verify the cylinder rotates freely when the door is open. If it binds only when the door is latched, the issue is likely frame alignment, not the cylinder.

Where DIY goes wrong: Schlage’s pin kits require a plug follower to prevent top pins and springs from launching into the door cavity - we recover these parts from carpets regularly. The springs are under compression; without a follower, they scatter. More critically, an incorrectly pinned cylinder will still accept the new key and appear to work, but with a false shear line that leaves the lock vulnerable to any key cut to intermediate depths. We find these “almost right” rekeys during security audits in Lincoln Park and Old Town, and we re-pin them properly.

We carry Schlage pinning kits, OEM cylinders, and GMS equivalents on every truck. Call (331) 202-1318 for a written quote - we’ll ask your series, your keyway, and how many cylinders, then name the exact price.
