There’s nothing dangerous about carrying a worn Medeco key. What goes wrong is the false economy of hardware store duplication.

A standard key duplicator copies the key’s current condition - wear and all - onto a new blank. For Medeco’s angled-cut system, this compounds the problem. The sidebar rides on precise geometric relationships between cut angles and depths; a copied worn key accelerates ignition wear and will fail sooner than the original. What you can check: the keyway stamp on the bow (Classic, Biaxial, or M3), whether a spare key behaves the same way (isolates key vs. ignition wear), and whether the problem is temperature-dependent (points to transponder or lubrication, not mechanical wear). What you cannot safely do at home: decode a lost key from the ignition, program a transponder without the factory scan tool, or mill a Medeco blank on anything but a dedicated high-security duplicator with the correct angle guides.
