Sargent Deadbolt Installation: The Chicago Owner’s Guide

Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent residential deadbolts fall into two main series: the 4870 single-cylinder and 4875 double-cylinder lines, both ANSI Grade 2. The model number is stamped on the edge of the door, just above the latch face, and again on the original key bow. If the stamping reads “4800” with additional digits, you have a commercial-grade Grade 1 unit - different backset, different prep, and a price tier we will quote separately.

The backset measurement (distance from door edge to center of the cylinder) is the critical compatibility check. Sargent deadbolts ship standard at 2-3/8″ or 2-3/4″. Chicago’s 1920s two-flats and courtyard buildings often have non-standard 2-1/2″ backsets from original mortise lock conversions. We carry both backsets and adjustable strikes to handle this without a second trip.

On OEM versus aftermarket: Sargent is now under the ASSA ABLOY umbrella, and factory-original cylinders carry the ASSA ABLOY keyway. We stock OEM Sargent hardware for warranty continuity, but also carry quality aftermarket equivalents with compatible keyways for owners who need matching to existing master-key systems. Signs Your Sargent Deadbolt Is Failing

• Thumb turn rotates but bolt does not extend. The tailpiece connecting thumb turn to bolt mechanism has sheared or slipped its set screw. This is the most common failure we see in Chicago’s 4870 series after 8-12 years of use, especially where doors swell seasonally and the bolt fights friction.
• Key operates roughly or requires jiggling. Worn pin tumblers or a corroded keyway, often accelerated by road salt tracked into entryways during January and February. The cylinder can be rekeyed, but if the plug itself is scored, replacement is the durable fix.
• Bolt extends partially then stops. Frame shift from freeze-thaw cycles has narrowed the strike opening, or the bolt face is deformed from repeated misalignment. In Chicago’s clay-heavy soils, this misalignment can shift 1/8″ or more between seasons.
• Loose cylinder rotates in the door. The mounting screws have stripped the door prep, or the cylinder collar has cracked. This is a security gap - the cylinder can sometimes be pulled forward with moderate force.
• Visible corrosion on exterior components. Chicago’s lake-effect humidity and freeze-thaw cycling pit chrome and brass finishes within 5-7 years on east-facing doors. Corrosion on the cylinder face often indicates internal moisture damage that will soon affect operation.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely verify the model number, backset measurement, and whether the door prep matches standard 2-1/8″ face bore and 1″ edge bore. A Phillips screwdriver and tape measure are sufficient for this inspection.

Where DIY goes wrong: Sargent deadbolts require precise tailpiece length and cam orientation. Too long, and the thumb turn binds; too short, and the mechanism slips. The strike must be shimmed to account for bolt throw depth - improper shimming leaves the bolt retracted under pressure, defeating the lock. We have replaced three owner-installed units this winter in Lincoln Park alone where the tailpiece was mis-cut and the cylinder was damaged in the process. The name is on the van.
