• Cylinder face shows scoring or the keyway has visible burrs. Someone attempted to pick or force the lock. Abloy’s disc-detainer mechanism resists standard picking tools, but a determined attack can deform the entry discs. The damaged discs must be replaced, not just repinned.
• Key requires increasing force over a Chicago winter. Moisture intrusion followed by freeze-thaw cycles swells the disc pack. We see this most on exterior gates in Humboldt Park and Pilsen, where wind-driven snow breaches the cylinder seal. Rekeying includes seal replacement and lubrication with Arctic-grade compound.
