• The key requires jiggling to turn. In Abloy disc-detainer locks, this usually indicates wear on the key’s angled cuts or on the internal discs themselves. The key and lock wear together; cutting a new key from the worn original copies the problem into the new blank.
• The key works in the door but not the ignition, or vice versa. Different lock cylinders in the same vehicle accumulate wear at different rates. The ignition typically sees more cycles and fails first. We cut to the factory code rather than copying the worn key, which restores function to both cylinders.
• Visible deformation or cracking at the key bow. Abloy keys use a hardened steel alloy, but the bow is often brass or nickel silver and can crack at the shoulder from torque or cold-weather brittleness. A cracked bow will eventually shear off in the lock.
• The key catches at a specific depth in the lock. This points to a single damaged or displaced disc inside the cylinder, or to a burr on the key blade from contact with pavement or other keys. We inspect the key under magnification before cutting.
• Copies made at hardware stores no longer work reliably. Abloy’s disc-detainer geometry requires specialized cutters with calibrated depth stops. Standard duplicators lack the precision; copies drift further from spec with each generation.
