Which Abloy Models This Applies To

Identification is straightforward if you know where to look. The cylinder face is stamped “ABLOY” with the series name below it; Protec2 keys have a dimple cut on both edges and a plastic head with the blue Abloy logo. Backset measurement matters here: Chicago frame construction from the 1920s through 1980s almost always uses 2-3/8″, while post-1990 construction and commercial steel doors typically run 2-3/4″. We measure on arrival and carry both.
OEM cylinders from Abloy Finland carry the full factory warranty and key control documentation. We also stock Medeco and Schlage high-security equivalents when the existing hardware has been discontinued or when the owner wants to maintain a single key system across mixed brands. The choice depends on whether you need new keys cut to a specific code or can accept a fresh keyway.
Signs Your Abloy Deadbolt Installation Is Failing
- Key resistance increases below 20°F. The rotating disc mechanism tolerates less debris than pin-tumbler designs. Chicago’s road salt and grit migrate into keyways through winter boots and coat cuffs. We find compacted residue on the first disc that the owner never sees.
- Bolt throws only partially, or binds in the strike. Frame shrinkage from dry winter air changes the alignment between bolt and strike plate by 1/8″ or more. The Haven Standard requires us to check this with the door both closed and under pressure; a bolt that seats in relaxed position may fail when the deadbolt is actually needed.
- Cylinder rotates but bolt does not extend. The tailpiece connecting cylinder to bolt mechanism has sheared or the cam has worn. This is more common in Abloy installations where the original installer used a generic tailpiece rather than the Abloy-specified hardened steel part.
- Key extracts with metal flakes or black residue. The discs are grinding against each other due to lack of lubrication or the wrong lubricant. Graphite powder is specified; oil-based products gum the mechanism in Chicago’s humidity swings.
- Strike plate screws have loosened or pulled out. Standard 3/4″ screws into soft pine frame stock fail under forced entry attempts or repeated use. We replace these with 3″ structural screws that bite into the stud behind the frame.

An owner can safely check three things: whether the key inserts fully, whether the strike screws are tight, and whether the bolt path is obstructed by paint buildup. Beyond that, Abloy deadbolt installation involves precise measurements. The cylinder tailpiece length must match the door thickness exactly; a 1/8″ error prevents the cam from engaging the bolt mechanism. The strike must be mortised to the correct depth so the bolt extends its full 1″ throw into the frame.
More critically, a misaligned installation leaves the bolt seated on the strike lip rather than in the pocket. The owner thinks the door is secured. It is not. We find this on roughly one in four service calls where the owner or a handyman handled the original installation.

We stock replacements and can rekey to your existing key code when possible.
