Abloy Lock Rekeying: The Chicago Owner’s Guide

Abloy lock rekeying in Chicago typically runs $45-$85 per cylinder for standard rim and mortise models, and $95-$165 for Protec2 and Exec high-security cylinders, with same-day service available when you call before 2 PM. We stock Abloy-compatible pinning kits, sidebar components, and key blanks on every service vehicle, so the rekey is finished in a single visit. Most Chicago owners discover they need a rekey after a move, a lost key, or a tenant change - or when the key starts catching at 10 o’clock in the cylinder, which usually means the disc pack has shifted out of tolerance from temperature cycling through a Midwest winter.

Which Abloy Models This Applies To

Abloy’s product lines break into three tiers, and the rekeying approach differs for each. The Classic and Profile cylinders - common on older Chicago multifamily doors and some commercial gate hardware - use a single sidebar with rotating discs. These can be rekeyed with standard pinning kits if the sidebar springs are still within spec. The Protec and Protec2 lines, which we see on newer high-security installations in Lincoln Park and the West Loop, add a second moving element, the disc controller, which means the rekey requires a factory-matched key blank and a specific sidebar code. The Exec series falls between - single sidebar, but with tighter tolerances that demand calibrated tools.

To identify your cylinder, check the face for the Abloy logo and a series stamp; Protec2 will also show a small “2” in an oval. If the stamp is worn off, measure the cylinder diameter: Classic is 30 mm, Protec2 is 32 mm, and Exec is 31 mm. We carry OEM Abloy key blanks and sidebar kits, plus aftermarket equivalents from Ilco and JMA that meet the same tolerances for Classic and Profile lines. For Protec2, we use OEM blanks exclusively - the aftermarket copies we’ve tested in Chicago conditions fail at a higher rate when the temperature drops below 15°F, which happens regularly in January.

Novak Lock & Security Chicago is an independent service provider with no affiliation to Abloy; we source parts through authorized distributors and maintain factory tooling for accurate rekeying across all series.

Signs Your Abloy Lock Rekeying Is Failing

Signs Your Abloy Lock Rekeying Is Failing
  • Key catches or sticks at a consistent angular position. This points to a disc with a damaged gate or accumulated debris from Chicago’s road-salt season working into the cylinder. The disc pack needs disassembly, cleaning, and repinning to restore smooth rotation.
  • Key turns but the bolt does not retract. The tailpiece or cam has sheared or slipped from the cylinder housing. On Abloy mortise cylinders, this often traces to a set screw that loosened after repeated thermal expansion and contraction.
  • New key works intermittently while the old key fails entirely. The sidebar springs have weakened unevenly. One spring still provides enough pressure for a close-matching key; the other does not. Both springs must be replaced during rekeying, not just one.
  • Cylinder face shows scoring or the keyway has visible burrs. Someone attempted to pick or force the lock. Abloy’s disc-detainer mechanism resists standard picking tools, but a determined attack can deform the entry discs. The damaged discs must be replaced, not just repinned.
  • Key requires increasing force over a Chicago winter. Moisture intrusion followed by freeze-thaw cycles swells the disc pack. We see this most on exterior gates in Humboldt Park and Pilsen, where wind-driven snow breaches the cylinder seal. Rekeying includes seal replacement and lubrication with Arctic-grade compound.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
Classic / Profile cylinder rekey $45-$65 Disassembly, disc inspection, new sidebar springs, pinning to new key, function test
Exec cylinder rekey $75-$95 Full disc pack inspection, calibrated sidebar fitting, new key blanks (2), seal check
Protec2 cylinder rekey $95-$165 OEM key blanks, disc controller verification, sidebar code matching, documented photo record
Additional keys $12-$28 each Cut on-site, tested in cylinder before you pay
Emergency / after-hours rekey Add $35 Same service, dispatched within 45 minutes

The range reflects cylinder condition and series complexity, not a bait-and-switch. When you call (331) 202-1318, the dispatcher quotes the full price - parts, labor, and keys - and Haven Standard Clause 1 prohibits the technician from changing it at your door. That rule has been in place since 2002. Every rekey includes a 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the key binds, the sidebar hangs, or anything fails to operate as quoted, we return and correct it at no charge.

An owner can safely check three things before calling: confirm the key is not bent (lay it flat on a counter), verify the cylinder face is not visibly damaged, and test whether the issue is the key or the lock by trying a spare. Beyond that, Abloy rekeying goes wrong quickly without the right tools. The disc-detainer mechanism requires a specialized follower to prevent the disc pack from spilling; without it, 11 or 12 tiny discs scatter across your floor, and their order matters. The sidebar springs are under compression and can launch if the housing is opened incorrectly. We carry calibrated followers, factory pinning kits, and spare disc sets on every truck. The name is on the van. The work is the argument.
