Which Kwikset Models This Applies To

Kwikset’s residential line breaks into three families, and each handles rekeying differently. The traditional pin-tumbler series - 660 deadbolts, 400/740 knobs, and 980/985 Grade 1 hardware - use standard .115-inch diameter bottom pins and .030-inch master wafers, rekeyable with any quality pinning kit. The SmartKey series (featuring the small slot beside the keyway and the reset tool) uses a sidebar mechanism with wafers rather than traditional pins; these require Kwikset’s specific reset cradle and a functioning current key to reprogram. The Avalon, Hawthorne, and Signature series are cosmetic variations built on these same cores.

To identify your model, check the latch faceplate for a stamped series number, or remove the interior thumbturn and look for the SmartKey slot. The dead giveaway on SmartKey hardware is the rectangular reset slot at the 2 o’clock position beside the keyway. Signs Your Kwikset Lock Rekeying Is Failing

• Key works inconsistently or requires jiggling. This usually indicates worn or improperly seated pins - either the original pins have developed flat spots from years of use, or a previous rekey left a pin sitting too high or too low in the chamber. In Chicago, we see this often on pre-2015 Kwikset hardware in vintage frame buildings where the door has settled and the bolt now binds slightly against the strike.
• SmartKey cylinder accepts the reset tool but won’t program to the new key. The sidebar wafers inside have likely been damaged by a previous forced reset, or the cradle tool was inserted at the wrong angle and bent the internal carrier. Once the SmartKey mechanism loses its indexing, the cylinder needs replacement - the wafers are not individually serviceable.
• Key turns smoothly but the bolt doesn’t retract fully. This is often misdiagnosed as a lock failure when it’s actually a rekeying aftermath issue - a too-long bottom pin or a master wafer installed at the wrong height is blocking the plug from rotating to the full 90 degrees needed to withdraw the bolt.
• Multiple keys from the same rekey set work differently. One key operates smoothly, another sticks, a third won’t enter. This points to inconsistent key duplicating - common with hardware-store machines that cut to the center of tolerance rather than the nominal spec. We cut to code on a Framon machine, which holds ±.001 inch.
• Lock was rekeyed recently and now feels “gritty” or makes clicking sounds. In our experience across Logan Square and Hyde Park, this is usually debris from the original keyway (construction dust, oxidation, or graphite over-lubrication) that got pushed into the pin chambers during the rekey. The cylinder needs to be pulled, cleaned with solvent, and repinned.

Here’s what you can safely check yourself. Verify you have a working key - without it, SmartKey cylinders cannot be reset and pin-tumbler cylinders require picking or drilling to remove. Confirm the keyway isn’t obstructed with a flashlight; compressed air can clear loose debris. Check that the door isn’t binding against the frame, which mimics lock failure.

Where DIY goes wrong: Kwikset pinning kits sold at hardware stores include generic bottom pins in .003-inch increments, but Kwikset factory tolerances are tighter. A pin that’s .0015 inch off spec will work in dry weather and fail when Chicago’s humidity swells the door frame. SmartKey resets require the cradle tool inserted to precise depth while the working key is turned exactly 30 degrees - off by five degrees and the carrier jams.
