Medeco Car Key Cutting: The Chicago Owner’s Guide

Medeco car key cutting in Chicago typically runs $145-$285 per key, including the high-security blank, precision milling, and programming if your vehicle requires it. We stock Medeco M3, Biaxial, and Classic automotive blanks on our service trucks and can cut most keys same-day at your location or our shop. Most owners discover they need a new Medeco car key when the original won’t turn the ignition smoothly, the cuts have worn shallow from years of Chicago grit, or they’ve lost their only working key and the valet key won’t start the engine.

Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco produces three automotive key platforms you’re likely to encounter in Chicago: the Classic series (single-angle milling, common on 1990s-2000s fleet vehicles), Biaxial (dual-angle cuts, introduced in the late 1990s for higher pick resistance), and M3 (triple-locking sidebar with angled cuts, current production for commercial and consumer applications). The blank you need is determined by the keyway stamped on the bow - Classic uses the standard Medeco keyway, Biaxial adds a second set of angled grooves, and M3 incorporates a slider mechanism that requires proprietary pinning.

We carry OEM Medeco blanks and select aftermarket equivalents that meet the same ASTM F883-13 durability spec. The aftermarket decision matters less for a spare key than for a lost-all-keys scenario, where only an OEM M3 blank guarantees sidebar tolerance tight enough to mate with a worn ignition. On Chicago fleet trucks we’ve serviced along Cicero Avenue, we’ve found aftermarket Biaxial blanks work reliably; on M3 systems for downtown commercial accounts, we default to factory blanks to avoid callback.

Signs Your Medeco Car Key Cutting Is Failing

Signs Your Medeco Car Key Cutting Is Failing
  • The key sticks at the 10 o’clock position in the ignition. This usually means the Medeco angled cuts have worn asymmetrically from years of insertion torque, or the sidebar pockets have collected road salt and magnesium chloride that Chicago spreads from November through March. The key still works, but the binding is progressive - it will get worse.
  • The key turns but the engine doesn’t crank. On Medeco keys with transponder chips (M3+ models), this indicates the glass vial has separated from the key head or the antenna coil in the ignition can’t read the weakened signal. Cold Chicago mornings accelerate this failure; we’ve replaced three in January on vehicles parked overnight in Bridgeport.
  • You need to jiggle the key to find the “sweet spot.” This points to wear in both the key cuts and the ignition wafers. Medeco’s sidebar design tolerates less cumulative wear than standard pin-tumbler systems before binding occurs. Continuing to force it risks shearing the sidebar or jamming the ignition.
  • The valet key works but the master doesn’t. The master key has seen more cycles and its angled cuts have worn closer to tolerance limits. Medeco keys are cut to 0.005-inch precision; even minor edge rounding from a key ring full of other keys can push it out of spec.
  • The key bow is cracked or the head is separating. Medeco’s ultralight key heads reduce pocket bulk but stress-concentrate at the blade-head junction. We’ve seen this on contractor keys carried with heavy ring sets in Lincoln Park and on the West Side - the blade pulls microscopically with each use until the head fractures completely.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range What’s Included
Medeco standard key cut (spare, working original present) $145-$195 OEM or spec-matched blank, precision duplicating, cut testing in your lock
Medeco key cut + transponder programming $195-$285 Blank, cutting, chip programming, ignition and door verification
Lost all keys / ignition decode and key generation $265-$385 Ignition disassembly, code extraction, key origination, programming, 2 keys

What drives the range: transponder generation (fixed code vs. encrypted), whether we have your key code on file or must decode from the ignition, and travel distance for mobile service. Every price is quoted in writing before we start - Haven Standard Clause 1: the price on the phone is the price on the invoice. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise.

There’s nothing dangerous about carrying a worn Medeco key. What goes wrong is the false economy of hardware store duplication.

A standard key duplicator copies the key’s current condition - wear and all - onto a new blank. For Medeco’s angled-cut system, this compounds the problem. The sidebar rides on precise geometric relationships between cut angles and depths; a copied worn key accelerates ignition wear and will fail sooner than the original. We’ve opened ignitions in Wicker Park where three hardware store copies had progressively degraded the wafers until only a factory-original cut would work.

What you can check: the keyway stamp on the bow (Classic, Biaxial, or M3), whether a spare key behaves the same way (isolates key vs. ignition wear), and whether the problem is temperature-dependent (points to transponder or lubrication, not mechanical wear). What you cannot safely do at home: decode a lost key from the ignition, program a transponder without the factory scan tool, or mill a Medeco blank on anything but a dedicated high-security duplicator with the correct angle guides.

We carry the blanks, the cutters, and the programming equipment on our Chicago service trucks. Call (331) 202-1318 and we’ll quote your exact situation before dispatching.
