Which Medeco Models This Applies To

Medeco has produced four distinct cylinder architectures since the 1960s, and each requires a different pinning approach. The original Medeco Original series uses a single shear line with angled cuts; the Biaxial adds a secondary sidebar gate; the M3 introduces a sliding element in the keyway; and the newer X4 (a Medeco-assimilated design) uses a conventional pin-tumbler stack with a sidebar. To identify your series, remove the cylinder and check the keyway face. Original and Biaxial keyways show a stepped, irregular profile; M3 adds a small rectangular slot at 6 o’clock for the slider; X4 looks closer to a standard Schlage SC1 but with a sidebar groove. The part number is also stamped on the cylinder tailpiece - Medeco part numbers beginning with 10- are Original, 20- are Biaxial, 30- are M3. We see this after customers have duplicated their Medeco key at non-authorized hardware stores that use standard key machines rather than Medeco’s angled-cut duplicators.
• Lock was rekeyed recently but the new key already feels rough. A previous technician used standard steel bottom pins instead of Medeco’s hardened, angled equivalents. The wrong pins chew the sidebar and destroy the cylinder within months. We document this with photos and show the customer the difference.
• Key works in warm weather, binds in cold. Chicago’s temperature swing from August to February can exceed 80 degrees. Brass cylinders expand and contract; if the pinning tolerance was set at the loose end of Medeco’s spec, winter contraction tightens the sidebar fit enough to jam. We pin to the tighter end of factory tolerance for this climate.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely verify the model series and count the cylinders needed - that information helps us quote accurately. What an owner should not attempt is disassembling the cylinder itself. Medeco’s angled pins and sidebar assembly require a pinning tray, a follower of correct diameter, and factory depth keys. More critically, the sidebar springs are under tension; if the cylinder plug rotates past the correct index point during disassembly, the sidebar and its springs launch into the room. We have found sidebar springs in carpet, in heating vents, and once in a customer’s coffee mug. The cylinder is then unrecoverable without a full replacement.
