Sargent Master Key Systems: The Chicago Owner’s Guide

A Sargent master key system replacement in Chicago typically runs $340-$780 per cylinder set, including the core, pins, and labor to recode to your existing hierarchy. We stock Sargent 6300 and 4800 series cores and keyways on our service trucks, and most replacements are completed in a single visit with the building’s access schedule preserved. You’ll usually discover the failure when a sub-master key suddenly opens doors it shouldn’t, or when the grand master stops turning smoothly in locks that worked last quarter.

Which Sargent Models This Applies To

Sargent master key systems break down into three families, and the part you need depends on which is installed. The 6300 series (standard interchangeable core, or IC) uses a figure-8 shaped core that slides out with a control key - look for the small Sargent logo stamped above the keyway and a six- or seven-pin chamber. The 4800 series (large format interchangeable core, or LFIC) has a rectangular housing and is common in Chicago schools and municipal buildings installed between 2005 and 2018. The older 6-line mortise cylinders, still found in pre-2010 Loop office conversions, use a threaded cylinder that screws directly into the lock body and does not interchange.

The critical gotcha: a 6300 core will not seat in a 4800 housing, even though both use Sargent LA keyways. We measure the housing depth and cam orientation before quoting - Haven Standard Clause 1 requires the price on the phone to match the invoice, so we confirm the series before we dispatch. OEM Sargent cores carry the factory keyway code and are warranted against manufacturing defect; our aftermarket equivalent, sourced from GMS and Ilco, matches the pinning spec at roughly 30% lower cost and carries the same 365-Day Done Right Promise.

Signs Your Sargent Master Key System Is Failing

Signs Your Sargent Master Key System Is Failing
  • Key opens doors outside its assigned level. This is the hallmark failure: a sub-master key suddenly operates a grand-master-only door. The cause is usually driver pin wear in the lower chambers, where years of key insertion have eroded the pin shoulders enough that a lower-level cut now lifts the stack to shear line. We find this most often in Chicago buildings with heavy seasonal humidity swings, which accelerates pin corrosion.
  • Grand master key sticks or requires jiggling. The master wafers (Sargent calls them “master rings” in the 6300 series) have developed burrs or the springs have lost tension. In our experience, this happens around the eight-year mark in buildings near the lakefront, where salt air infiltrates the core.
  • Control key will not extract the core. The control lug has sheared or the retaining clip has walked out of position. This is a truck-stock repair - we carry the clips and lugs for both 6300 and 4800 series - but attempting to force the core out with pliers destroys the housing.
  • Inconsistent operation across floors or wings. One floor works fine, another doesn’t. This points to a mismatched pinning job from a previous rekey, not a part failure - but the fix is the same: pull the cores, decode the bitting, and repin to the original matrix.
  • Keyway visible damage or “smile” wear. The keyway profile has worn wider at the top, allowing keys to cant and miss the bottom pins. This is common in high-traffic Chicago retail spaces with brass keys; the fix is a new core with hardened nickel silver keyway.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Installed pricing for Sargent master key system work in Chicago:

Service Typical Range
Single 6300 IC core, repinned to existing master $340-$420
Single 4800 LFIC core, repinned to existing master $420-$520
6-line mortise cylinder, master-keyed $280-$380
Full system decode and repin (per cylinder) $180-$240
New master key generation (lost hierarchy) $180-$320

The range reflects core grade (standard vs. high-security), the complexity of your master hierarchy (two-level vs. four-level), and whether we need to decode existing keys or work from a bitting list you provide. Every quote is delivered in writing before we start - Haven Standard Clause 1 - and includes the core, pinning labor, two working keys per lock, and a documented photo record of the installed hardware. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers both parts and labor; if a pinned chamber fails or a key stops working, we return and correct it.

DIY or Call Us?

There is nothing dangerous about a Sargent master key cylinder - no springs under tension, no electrical components, no cutting. What makes DIY a poor bet is the precision: pin chambers are measured in thousandths of an inch, and a .003″ tolerance error means your sub-master now opens the server room. A pinning kit for Sargent LA keyways runs $180-$240, and without a key gauge and decoder, you’re working blind.

What you can safely check: confirm the series (6300 vs. 4800 vs. 6-line) by photographing the cylinder face and any stamped numbers, then call us with that image. What we do not recommend: buying a “universal” core online and hoping the cam fits - Sargent cams are handed (left vs. right) and tailpiece lengths vary by lock body. We’ve replaced too many homeowner attempts that ended with a core stuck in the housing and the control key broken off inside. If you’re managing access for a Chicago building, the cost of a mis-pinned cylinder is higher than the labor to do it right.
